Floridians Need REAL Energy Progress

The cost of gasoline has been emptying consumers wallets. The use of gasoline has also left America dependent on foreign oil from unstable sources and increased global warming pollution. We need more fuel-efficient vehicles, renewable electricity sources, and bio-fuel production.

The Senate and the House both passed Energy bills. Now, we have to make sure the final Energy bill contains three amendments. First, fuel efficiency standards for our vehicles of 35mpg by 2020. The U.S. is behind all other industrialized nations when it comes to the fuel efficiency of their vehicles. At the same time, 2/3 of U.S. oil comes from imports. We need better fuel efficiency for energy independence. When combined with increased biofuel and ethanol production, the benefits of CAFE are magnified.

As shown in a recent study by Consumer Federation of America (CFA), these two amendments cut oil imports by 2.4 million barrels per day, about 20% of imports. The last amendment further increases our independence. Renewable Electricity Standards will require utilities to use renewable energy sources like solar energy for 15% of their electricity. As utilities rely more heavily on natural gas, electricity prices have soared. Using renewable energy sources lowers natural gas consumption, which in turn lowers consumer cost. This also cuts greenhouse gas emissions.

Congress must ACT NOW to make these standards happen.

Tell your Representative to do what's right for the consumer -- adopt fuel efficiency standards of 35 mpg by 2020, require 15% of electricity to be from renewable sources, and  increase bio-fuel production.

U.S. Representatives Kendrick Meek, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Gus Bilirakis, Alan Boyd, and Ron Klein need to hear from you!
