If you are not sure what ENERGY STAR is, that's OK? Most Floridians aren't, either. ENERGY STAR is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) program that encourages consumers to buy homes, lights, equipment and appliances that perform as well and more efficiently than the typical home or appliance. All products are not created equally - new technology is available that delivers more energy efficient operation. Consumers save big on their power bills and everyone breathes cleaner air. ENERGY STAR puts an objective government-backed seal on any product that qualifies. By replacing old products with energy-efficient ones, you help your pocketbook, your community's health, and your country's security. |

| Major appliances have a big yellow tag called the EnergyGuide. It helps shoppers compare operating costs from different levels of energy used. Look for the EnergyGuide on refrigerators, freezers, water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, air conditioners and heat pumps. It tells you exactly how much the power will cost each year to use the appliance. Multiply the costs by the number of years you would expect to own the appliance, and compare costs between different models. | ||

Choosing ENERGY STAR appliances is the smartest way to save money in your home. Without turning anything off or down you can save as much as 30%, or $400 on the average annual power bill of $1,300. Often these models do cost a little more. But compare the energy costs over the life of appliances to any price difference: the Energy Star model more than pays for itself. You don't have to trust the store's salesman or the manufacturer's word? ENERGY STAR puts the federal government's objective, reliable report on every appliance. If you are buying a new home, ask your builder to use ENERGY STAR materials. New, more efficient systems are becoming available everyday that are stronger and insulate far better. Look for new homes displaying the ENERGY STAR. Houses actually cause more pollution than cars. Using energy efficient products in your home reduces pollution as much as never driving your car for 7 years. ENERGY STAR shows the way to the easiest, smartest way to reduce the pollution your home is responsible for. You can feel good knowing there is less carbon dioxide, Sulphur dioxide, mercury and other pollutants in Florida's air because chose Energy Star! |

How FCAN is helping EPA: the Orlando awareness project |
|
|
People in Orlando were found to have a low level of awareness of the ENERGY STAR program. The EPA wants to change that. This spring and summer, FCAN Foundation is working with EPA and the Consumer Federation of America on a public awareness campaign to increase recognition of ENERGY STAR. With Orlando's continued rapid growth, there are many opportunities for consumers to choose energy efficient homes and offices, if they were just aware of the choices that now do exist. FCAN Foundation is proud to assist in this campaign. We will provide information on ENERGY STAR at Earth Day as well as other events with a more general audience. After all, you don't have to be an environmentalist to want to save money on your power bill! |
