Sinkhole Problems

Pasco and Hernando Counties have experienced dramatic problems with sinkholes. Geologists say this area of the state is particularly prone to the problem.  A sinkhole can strike anywhere, anytime, and take your home right out from under you.

FCAN linked up with a local group called Having Affordable Coverage to sponsor a Sinkhole Workshop in New Port Richey.  We invited citizens and experts and brought in a professional facilitator to help generate ideas to solve the sinkhole problems.  The results of the workshop are on the HAC web page.

Senator Fasano and Rep Legg sponsored legislation that removed sinkhole coverage from insurance policies in the area, but allowed citizens to "opt in" if they wanted to keep the coverage. Although Fasano and Legg say this is a "pilot program," it has no ending date.

At the workshop, many people were confused and concerned about the program. While they wanted to save money on insurance, they were concerned that if they dropped the coverage, they could lose everything to a sinkhole.  Many people didn't understand the program.

When coverages are left out of policies, people are vulnerable and certainly aren't secure.
