Medicare Rx Community Education Project

Under the New Medicare Rx Law:

-Rx drug companies, HMOs and private insurance companies will receive billions of dollars in windfall profits, overpayments, and tax breaks, while HMOs are being reimbursed at 109% of their costs and Medicare is prohibited from negotiating discounts,

-2.8 million very low-income seniors and people with disabilities will be disqualified from assistance, and that millions of retirees nationwide (160,000 here in Florida) will lose their more comprehensive retirement package drug coverage,

-Billions of dollars are set aside for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) another tax break for wealthy Americans while Medicare beneficiaries are not even eligible for these tax free savings accounts.

Hundreds of organizations have allied across the country in projects to help Americans learn the facts about this new law and speak out for lower Rx drug prices

Here in Florida the Florida Consumer Action Network Foundation is proud to be partnering with Florida Alliance for Retired Americans and Common Cause Florida in a public education/community service project to help seniors, people with disabilities, taxpayers and local governments understand the impacts of this new law.

The goals of the Medicare Rx Community Education Project are to create awareness, stimulate discussion, and to organize our communities to demand lower drug prices and a real prescription benefit in Medicare, that covers all needed drugs for all seniors and disabled Americans

Presentations, which include a 12-minute video, The New Medicare Prescription Drug Law, hosted by Walter Cronkite, are available at no charge to any interested group or organization.  We are reaching out to seniors and people with disabilities at retirement communities, group homes and senior centers, etc.  We would greatly appreciate any suggestions regarding how we could make this project more useful to our communities.

This project is being offered as a free community education service throughout Florida (we are not selling anything).  We sincerely hope that you will join us in this important community education project.
